The Baden Powell Project
Project Objectives
To help preserve the heritage of the fishing industry of Kings Lynn and extend knowledge of it through the restoration of two historic boats or smacks.
The Baden Powell to be restored and exhibited (onshore) in a prominent place in King’s Lynn.
To take advice on the viability of both vessels, as to the cost effectiveness of capital outlay.
To keep them in sound condition for future generations.
To use them in connection with the Sea Scouts as training vessels.
To use them as historical learning aids for local schools, bringing our ancient fishing and sailing heritage to life.
To make them self sufficient in upkeep once restored, by the use of charters, contributions and/or grants.
What is the best way forward?
Option 1: A professional restoration to sailing condition would be enormously expensive in time and money.
Option 2: A replica could be built at lower cost and in less time.
Both these approaches mean that the Baden Powell would have to be away in a boatyard while the work is done.
Option 3: A restoration in King's Lynn using volunteer labour with occasional professional help.
Will the Baden Powell sail again?
How practical is that?
Ideally, the Baden Powell would be rebuilt so that passengers could be taken out to The Wash to see the seals, or upriver to see the Fen landscape.
She could even be used to re-create the cockling trips she did for so long under sail.
Tim and the volunteers hope that eventually a place will be found for the Baden Powell where she can be appreciated by the general public and help tell the story of Lynn's long association with fishing in The Wash.
That might be in the new marina planned for the town. Or in the Purfleet by the Custom House.
But that's for the future. Now, the urgent need is for work to begin on the Baden Powell to prepare her for her place in the history of King's Lynn.
